Chinese consumers made about 12.74 trillion yuan (US$2.07 trillion) worth of payments through smartphones in 2013, up 248 percent from a year ago, Xinhua news agency reported over the weekend, citing data from China Banking Association. About 458 million people are said to have opened personal mobile banking accounts, up 55.5 percent from a year ago. Corporate clients are estimated at 114,300, up 23 percent from 2012. Payment made through Tencent Holdings’ (00700.HK) WeChat messenger app payment channel reached 665 million yuan last year, the report said.
