Shanghai 2013 births down but baby boom forecast, paper says

Shanghai authorities said Tuesday that a total of 211,700 babies were born in the city last year, down from a record 239,600 in 2012, Shanghai Daily reported on Wednesday. Just over 51 percent of the total, or 108,400 babies, were born to Shanghainese families, the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission was quoted as saying in a white paper on health. Despite the slight dip in births, authorities expect the annual figure to rise by between 20,000 and 30,000 in the coming years as a result of a recent change to the family planning law, the report said.
