China is tightening a ban on new government buildings as part of an ongoing frugality campaign, China Daily reported Thursday, citing a document from the State Council. It will strengthen a crackdown on unapproved government building projects and hold erring officials accountable. The central government has investigated 147 officials for suspected violation of the ban and punished 55, the report said. The central government declared a five-year ban on all new government building construction in July, the report said.
