Largest China freshwater lake starts fishing ban, Xinhua says

Authorities in eastern China’s Jiangxi province have imposed a three-month fishing moratorium in Poyang Lake, the nation’s largest freshwater lake, that began at midday on Thursday, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. All fishing activities and other actions that may threaten fish and the lake environment are prohibited during the moratorium, which was first introduced in 2002 to protect fishing resources during the egg-laying season, the report said. Similar fishing bans will be adopted in the Jiangxi section of the Yangtze River and Pearl River later this year, local fishery officials were quoted as saying.
