Lenovo buys some Unwired Planet patents, paper says

China’s Lenovo Group Ltd. said Thursday that it has agreed to buy a portfolio of patents from Unwired Planet Inc. and license some patents in a deal worth US$100 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. The patent purchase from Unwired Planet, a US-based intellectual property company focused exclusively on the mobile industry, includes 21 patent families, including patents for 3G and LTE mobile technologies and other important mobility patents, the report said. The purchase “will serve the company well as we grow and develop our world-wide smartphone and mobile PC Plus business in new markets,” Jay Clemens, general counsel of Lenovo, was quoted as saying in a statement.
