‘No Sale,’ brands tell Alibaba’s Tmall, WSJ says

Many international retailers such as San Francisco-based Benefit Cosmetics and Japanese fashion-brand aggregator Zozotown are staying away from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s online shopping site Tmall, saying its steep discounting and cutthroat competition undercut their business, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. Some high-end brands like Louis Vuitton also say unauthorized sellers of their products have established shops on the site—the very type of problem businesses had hoped Tmall would prevent, the report said. Tmall, however, only hosts sellers, and “pricing strategies are decided by the brand”, Janet Wang, Tmall’s head of international business development, was quoted as saying.
