Agreement paves way for electricity futures contract, paper says
The Shanghai Futures Exchange has signed a memorandum with the China Electricity Council in preparation for the country’s first futures contract for electricity, China Daily reported Thursday, citing the Shanghai Securities Journal. The contract is expected to “help reveal electricity’s market-based price”, which will in turn eliminate industry overcapacity, the report said. The mainland authorities now use administrative means to set electricity prices, it said.
