China rejects arbitration over maritime dispute, paper says

China will not accept international arbitration sought by the Philippines on the South China Sea dispute, Shanghai Daily reported Monday, citing foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei. Beijing wants Manila to return to bilateral talks, abide by their mutual consensus and observe a code of conduct for all claimants, Hong was quoted as saying. Earlier, Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said Manila had asked a UN arbitration tribunal to declare China’s claims over the waters a violation of international law, the report said.
