Maoming residents protest against PX factory, BBC says
Residents of Maoming city in Guangdong province took to the streets Sunday night in protest against a proposal to build a factory to make the toxic industrial chemical paraxylene (PX), BBC.com’s Chinese service reported Tuesday. Scuffles broke out between the police and protestors but no casualties were reported by the authorities. PX is used to make fabric and plastic bottles. The proposed factory is a joint-venture between the Maoming government and China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. Since 2012, strong public opposition has prompted the governments of Dalian, Ningbo and Kunming to scrap plans for similar PX plants, the report said.
