Procurement begins for central pork reserve, paper says

China’s Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance and several other government departments on March 27 commenced the first procurement exercise for central pork reserve, aiming to stock up 65,000 tons of the meat, the National Business Daily reported Tuesday. Commerce ministry officials were quoted as saying that the government hopes to prevent pork prices from sliding further, in an effort to stabilize the market and protect the livelihood of pig farmers. Pork prices across 18 provinces fell for 15 consecutive weeks and hit a new three-year low recently, the report noted.
