Taiwan could lose US$16.8 billion in trade receipts a year if a free trade agreement (FTA) among China, Japan and South Korea is approved, Economic Daily News reported Thursday, citing Premier Jiang Yi-huah. The amount is equivalent to 3 percent of Taiwan’s overall trade last year. For that reason, Taiwanese should support a cross-strait pact on goods and services, Jiang was quoted as saying. He said Taiwan lags South Korea in FTAs with other economies and the government should explain this more clearly to ensure Taiwanese understand what is at stake, the report said.
