Shoppers in the US have found it difficult to secure official merchandise from Disney’s popular animation movie ‘Frozen’, as toys and clothing were sold out everywhere. The most sought after item, the Princess Elsa dress, was selling for as much as US$1,600 on ebay.com. Some eager parents were paying US$225 for replicas of the dress on craft sites such as Etsy.com, Bloomberg reported Thursday.
‘Frozen’ became the top-grossing animated film worldwide with box office sales of almost US$1.1 billion, according to Box Office Mojo, a website that tracks box office revenue in an algorithmic way. Other revenue from DVDs and TV rights would also help Disney make another US$1 billion. The California-based company is expected to reap a hefty haul from merchandise sales, which analysts are yet to put an exact figure.
More than four months after the movie’s release in November 2013, the craving for the princess dress is still unabated, despite Disney’s repeated restocking efforts.
Almost all of the ‘Frozen’ merchandise is made in China and it would take two to three months for retailers to receive new shipments, according to Jim Silver, the editor of toy publication Time to Play.
