Hu Jintao visits home of late party chief, paper says

Former president Hu Jintao {胡錦濤} paid tribute to the late Communist Party leader Hu Yaobang {胡耀邦} by visiting his former home in Liuyang, Hunan province, last Friday, Ming Pao Daily reported Monday.

Hu Jintao, who was succeeded by President Xi Jinping {習近平} a year ago, was accompanied by the provincial governor and party secretary as well as the city’s party chief, according to the newspaper.

Hu Yaobang is regarded as one of the pioneers of China’s reform, taking bold steps and adopting liberal thinking to tackle chronic problems faced by the ruling party. His death on April 15, 1989, is considered as having inspired pro-democracy students to stage massive protests on Tiananmen Square, which culminated in a violent state crackdown on June 4, 1989.

Cao Lijun, the city’s party secretary, said during the visit that officials should take Hu Yaobang as a mirror to reflect their own insufficient efforts at reform.

Hu Yaobang’s son said his father, who was forced to step down as party chief, was in fact a hero of the people, the report said.
