Guangzhou, the capital and largest city of Guangdong province, is planning to have 80 percent of its manufacturing production done by robots by 2020, state news agency Xinhua reported Wednesday.
Mechanical robots will replace humans in certain jobs in automobile assembly, food processing and manufacturing of pharmaceutical, electronic and dangerous products, the report said, citing the municipal government.
Subsidies of up to 30,000 yuan (US$4,800) will be offered to companies that buy or rent a robot. A maximum one-off incentive of 500,000 yuan will be given to those that buy a complete set of automation equipment.
The move comes amid spiralling labor costs in Guangdong where workers in labor-intensive industries have staged frequent protests and strikes this year over pay.
The latest massive strike continued for a third day Wednesday in a shoe factory in Dongguan.
