HKU medical student reveals her past illegal status

Nineteen-year-old Betty Wong, who recently gained admission into the University of Hong Kong’s medical school, has revealed on Facebook that she was an illegal immigrant until January this year, Apple Daily reported Thursday.

Since entering Hong Kong illegally in 2003 from the mainland, Wong is said to have been using an identity document known as “Form of Recognizance” until she was notified by the Immigration Department this January that she would have the right of abode in Hong Kong.

Facing public criticism, Wong insisted that her revelation about her status was not to be seen as a show-off gesture, but instead aimed at serving as an inspirational story for students not performing well in open examinations.

Wong also rejected accusations that she was using Hong Kong’s resources, but promised to work hard to repay the society.

Betty told her story with a 10,000-word blog on Facebook last week. After the blog post, she was immediately criticized by some anti-mainland Chinese netizens as being a “free rider” in Hong Kong, taking unfair advantage of the territory’s system and resources. She recently agreed to be interviewed by Apple Daily, together with her boyfriend.
