Hyundai Motor’s China joint venture saw its plans go awry at the Beijing International Auto Show on Sunday as popular Korean actor, model and singer Kim Soo-hyun couldn’t make it on time for a public relations event, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Kim, the actor best known for playing an ageless alien on Korean TV drama “My Love From the Star”, was scheduled to put in an appearance at a Hyundai briefing at the auto expo, but failed to turn up on time as he was stuck in Beijing’s notorious traffic, forcing the automaker to cancel the briefing, according to the report.
The South Korean star’s scheduled appearance had drawn huge crowds to the show, even though the event was limited to the media and industry officials on Sunday.
But when the news came that Kim wouldn’t show, the audience began to boo, the report said. A Hyundai official told the crowd that they would get an autographed photo of Kim if they visited the Beijing Hyundai Weibo account, but many of the fans weren’t impressed, it said.
Kim eventually appeared about two hours later at the Hyundai booth for just a few minutes, according to the auto maker’s Weibo account. The company said the appearance had been rescheduled for security reasons.
Kim wasn’t the only K-Popper who left audiences hanging, the report said, noting that Hyundai’s sister company Kia Motors had announced that Korean A-lister Lee Minhoo wouldn’t attend its event.
