Two Chinese engineers were abducted by unidentified men Friday while working at an oil field owned by a Sudanese petroleum company, Xinhua reported Sunday, citing sources at the Chinese Embassy in Khartoum.
Xinhua quoted Sudanese media as saying that an armed group from the Darfur rebel Justice and Equality Movement attacked the Sudanese Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Co.’s Kanar oil field in Balila, West Kordofan, and kidnapped three engineers, two Chinese and a Sudanese. Other media reports said the third engineer is Algerian.
Rebel groups have been active on the Darfur-Kordofan border area in western Sudan, targeting vital projects such as the oil fields to put pressure on the government in Khartoum, Xinhua said.
