Alipay, the third-party payment service affiliated with Alibaba Group, is linking up with Japan’s leading e-commerce company, Rakuten, Xinhua reported Monday.
It follows a tie-up announced last week with Yahoo Japan and comes as the decline in the yen lures more shoppers to Japanese e-commerce platforms, the report said.
Just 250 or so shops under Rakuten’s international shopping service are accepting Alipay payments for now but the number is expected to grow to about 10,000, the report said.
The Wall Street Journal said Rakuten’s Japanese marketplace has a total of 42,000 sellers, and about 10,000 sell their products offshore through the platform’s international service.
