BYD adds zest to hybrid lineup with Tang SUV

Warren Buffett-backed carmaker BYD Co. Ltd. (01211.HK) launched its new Tang {唐} hybrid SUV at Beijing’s international car show on the weekend, the first in the company’s 542 series, according to a BYD statement Saturday.

The company said “5” stands for zero-to-100 kilometers per hour acceleration in 5 seconds; “4” for four-wheel drive; and “2” for two liters of fuel used per 100 kilometers. From now on, BYD said, all its new-energy cars will adopt the 542 standards.

BYD said the Tang will go on sale in the fourth quarter and have a driving range of 85 kilometers in pure-electric mode. In hybrid driving mode, the Tang’s power and peak torque are equivalent to those of a 6-liter gasoline-powered car, it said.

Starting with the debut of the Qin {秦} last year, the company has named its new-energy models after prosperous Chinese dynasties. Chairman Wang Chuanfu said the Han {漢} line will be launched in 2015 and Ming {明} in 2016, Aastocks.com reported Monday.

The report said BYD sold 2,384 Qins in the first quarter, and plans to sell 20,000 hybrid and pure-electric cars this year.
