Tesla Motors Inc., an American maker of premium electric cars, might build production facilities in China over the next three or four years as demand rises in the country, the China Securities Journal reported Tuesday, citing Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive officer.
The carmaker will deliver its first batch of Model S vehicles to Beijing customers Tuesday, but a lack of charging stations is holding back wider promotion of e-cars across the country.
Musk was quoted as saying that Tesla will put money into the construction of charging stations in Beijing and Shanghai in the near term, and will set up 24-hour super-charging networks in China.
He also said that because China is a major market for Tesla, the company is planning to offer tailored sales and services to mainland customers.
