China sales uptick buoys Yum profit, WSJ says

Same-store sales at Yum Brands Inc.’s China outlets grew 9 percent in the first quarter to help lift the company’s profit for the period by 18 percent, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Yum, the parent firm of KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, exceeded Wall Street’s expectations as the company tries to bounce back from food-safety fears over KFC chicken suppliers in China, the report said.

Yum launched an advertising and social-media campaign last year to reassure customers and has added two new chicken sandwiches and three rice dishes as well as drinks and desserts to its menu in China, the report said.
