Be fair on one country, two systems, Li Yuanchao tells HK media

Vice President Li Yuanchao {李源潮} has told Hong Kong media to take a fair and rational tack to protect the principle of one country, two systems, Radio Television Hong Kong reported Thursday.

During a one-hour meeting in Beijing with top executives from 20 Hong Kong media outlets Thursday, Li also voiced central government opposition to the Occupy Central campaign.

The Hong Kong Economic Journal quoted Lee Cho Jat, president of the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong, as saying Li described the campaign as illegal, a hinderance to progress on universal suffrage and a threat to stability and prosperity in Hong Kong.

In addition, the vice president said China will stand firm on eradicating corruption and make it a priority to resolve mounting tensions between Hongkongers and mainlanders.

Li stressed that China is pursuing important reforms, and the Hong Kong media should use opportunities to help Hong Kong grow. Li also complimented the Hong Kong press on their professionalism.
