China lifts ban on new Sinopec, CNPC projects, WSJ says

China’s environmental watchdog has lifted the ban on new projects at China National Petroleum Corp. and China Petrochemical Corp., also known as Sinopec, the country’s two largest refiners, after they were found to have met pollution control targets last year, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection was quoted as saying in an online statement that the two companies increased spending, fixed problems and accelerated the construction of key projects that helped reduce emissions of four major pollutants in 2013.

The two companies accounted for more than three quarters of the country’s refining capacity, the report said, adding that the ban lasted for nearly eight months.
