Hong Kong Television Network Ltd. will launch a 24-hour online shopping channel to boost revenues after its failure to get free-to-air TV and mobile-TV licenses, the Hong Kong Economic Times reported Thursday, citing HKTV chairman Ricky Wong.
Wong said the planned round-the-clock shopping channel will focus on middle and high-end local and overseas products, and share profits with suppliers.
The company has approached 20-30 retailers so far, and the feedback has been positive, he said.
Some market observers were quoted as saying that the model may not succeed because most Hongkongers prefer the convenience of shopping at brick-and-mortar outlets.
HKTV planned to launch a mobile-TV service in July, but the Communications Authority said it first had to obtain a free-to-air TV license. Wong accused the government of deliberately scuttling his plan.
