Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, an Indonesian maid allegedly tortured by her Hong Kong employer, has been named by TIME magazine as one of the world’s 100 most influential people, Apple Daily reported Friday.
The magazine praised Erwiana’s courage to fight back and take legal action against her employer, as well as her advocacy for better laws to protect others.
From May last year, the 23-year-old woman allegedly suffered eight months of beatings by her employer, a 44-year-old mother of two in Hong Kong. The woman allegedly disfigured Erwiana so badly she was barely recognizable, it said.
“She spoke out against the woman, who faces charges including causing grievous bodily harm and common assault… Erwiana is … placing a spotlight on the plight of a vulnerable and often invisible population. It is brave women like her who speak up for the voiceless who will create lasting change,” the magazine said.
President Xi Jinping also made the list, along with tech titans Pony Ma of Tencent Inc., and Jack Ma of Alibaba Group. They are joined by award-winning actress Yao Chen, who blogs on everything from the environment to social justice to her 66 million followers on Weibo.
