Athlete overcomes odds to win silver medal in China 10-km run

An athlete in China has overcome difficult odds to win the silver medal in this year’s 10-Kilometer Run sports event in Xi’an, Huashang Daily reported Tuesday.

Zhang Baoqiang, a participant from Lanzhou, is said to have been punched and kicked by two other athletes on Sunday during the course of the race. Despite the beating, Zhang did not pull out from the race, and finally managed to win the second place, the paper said.

An investigation has found that the persons who beat up Zhang were from the Xi’an Institute of Physical Education. They were quoted as saying that a fracas involving tangled limbs at the starting line led to the fight.

They apologized to Zhang and proposed to pay for all his medical expenses. Meanwhile, the racing committee bore part of Zhang’s medical fee and offered him a bonus normally given to a golden medal winner, according to the report.
