What the… police dogs bite the hand that guides them

Talk about turning on your master, or partner for that matter.

Police dogs in the West Kowloon Emergency Unit have attacked their human partners nine times in the past 18 months, Apple Daily reported Wednesday.

The latest victim almost lost a thumb after a bite from a Belgian Malinois led to serious infection. He is still in hospital and is seeking compensation from the government.

Dog training specialists are proposing the recall of German Shepherds to replace the aggressive breed which makes up 90 percent of the police kennel, the report said.

The animal in the incident, a four-year-old who has been in service for two years, is in quarantine pending further tests.

All dogs will henceforth undergo a more extensive obedience training before being put on duty again, a police spokesman was quoted as saying.
