Firefly no-show ignites riot in Hangzhou, CNS says

What was supposed to be an evening of romance erupted into a riot Wednesday as a heavily promoted event featuring fireflies fizzled at Hangzhou’s Xiang Lake, leaving thousands of angry ticket holders, China News Service reported Thursday.

Some of the more than 10,000 people who bought tickets to the event attacked the park’s office, breaking windows and doors and demanding refunds, the report said.

The riot broke out after 30,000 or so fireflies that were expected to light up the night sky failed to put on the much-promised visual feast. After two hours of waiting and no explanation from the organizers, the crowd became impatient and police had to be called in as the violence escalated.

The park sold tickets for 30 yuan (US$4.79) per person, and some scalpers demanded up to 180 yuan.
