Civil rights lawyer Pu Zhiqiang was detained by police in Beijing on Tuesday for alleged provocation after he attended a seminar last Saturday as part of commemorative activities leading to the 25th anniversary of the bloody crackdown on the 1989 pro-democracy movement in Tiananmen Square, Ming Pao Daily reported Wednesday.
At least four others were arrested and detained at the Haidian police precinct, the report said, quoting unidentified sources.
Liu Xiaoyuan, another civil rights lawyer, called the arrest of Pu, 49, and his companions an obvious abuse of authority as the small gathering was peaceful and did not violate any laws. Friends and family members were expected to put up bail for their release pending trial, the report said.
