Pacific Place restaurant Domani has become such a fixture in the city over the last six years that its imminent closure prompted Italian consul general Alessandra Schiavo to write to the owner to say how much she will miss it, Apple Daily reported Wednesday.
Domani will shut its doors on May 18 as Swire Group takes back the venue to operate its own restaurants.
JR Robertson, managing director for the restaurant’s owner El Grande Concepts, said he is keen to move Domani to another site but suitable venues won’t be available for another year.
“In the meantime I will lose my chefs, staff, and many other things,” Robertson said.
“I get that landlords are always the winner. I can understand if I have to leave because of the high rent, but now Swire is getting it back for its own restaurant and cannot let me stay for one more year.”
One of Domani’s attractions has been offerings of rare food like Stracciatella di bufala, a cheese produced from the milk of Italian buffalo, the report said. The cheese must be eaten within nine days of production and is hard to find even in Italy.
El Grande has operated another Italian restaurant, Grappa’s Ristorante, in the shopping mall for 24 years. Its Inn Side Out restaurant was also forced to relocate from the Sunning Plaza in Causeway Bay to make way for redevelopment.
