Journalist Gao Yu arrested for ‘leaking state secrets’

Mainland journalist Gao Yu {高瑜} has been under police detention since April 24 in Beijing on charges that she provided state secrets to overseas contacts, state broadcaster China Central Television reported Thursday, citing the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.

The 70-year-old journalist was the subject of criminal investigation into the leakage of a confidential central government document, which she is said to have illegally obtained and was later published on a foreign website in August 2013. The public security bureau revealed that evidence was seized at Gao’s home during her arrest.

In a morning news program Thursday, a CCTV broadcast showed Gao, her face blurred, confessing to having acquired the document in question illegally and expressing deep regret for her wrongdoing.

Gao was handed a six-year sentence back in 1993 also for leaking state secrets, the report said.

Gao joins a growing list of activists and intellectuals to be detained ahead of the anniversary of the bloody military crackdown on pro-democracy students on June 4, 1989, the South China Morning Post reported Thursday.
