Antibiotics taint water across China

More than five dozen types of antibiotics have been detected in surface water around China, raising the alarm about the country’s chronic misuse of the drugs, Shanghai Daily reported Friday, citing an academic report.

The report, compiled by researchers from Tsinghua University, Tongji University and East China University of Science and Technology, warned that the residues can pose health risks even in low levels.

On average each person on the mainland uses nearly 10 times the amount of antibiotics a year as an American, and nearly 70 percent of drugs China produces are antibiotics — compared with a global average of 30 percent, the newspaper said.
