Hong Kong has 34 US dollar billionaires — by itself an impressive number — but it has nothing on London, which has the most in the world, the Vancouver Sun reports.
The British capital boasts 72 super-rich residents with fortunes above 1 billion pounds (US$1.6 billion), topping Moscow with 48, New York (43), San Francisco (42) and Los Angeles (38).
Britain also leads the world in the number of billionaires per capita, with one in every 607 people. That compares with one in a million Americans.
The rankings were first reported by Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper, which has been compiling the annual list of the country’s richest people for years but only now began to compare them with their counterparts around the world.
Indian-born brothers Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja topped the British list with a 11.9 billion pound fortune. The two run global conglomerate Hinduja Group.
They dislodged last year’s richest man, Alisher Usmanov, who has seen his fortune fall by 2.65 billion pounds to 10.65 billion pounds, largely because of the decline of the ruble.
Other notables on the list are steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, in third place, and Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich, who dropped from fifth to ninth.
