They didn’t so much fly by the seat of their pants as much as take a plunge into well-charted waters but the entrants in Sunday’s Red Bull Flugtag challenge all did their dash with verve.
About 40,000 people turned out at the New Central Harbourfront to see 40 teams launch their mostly ill-fated flying machines into the air — and into Victoria Harbor.
The event was last held four years ago but time did not seem to dampen enthusiasm for it, with a record 284 applications for the competition, twice the number last time, according to the organizer.
Among the 40 teams selected to spread their wings were ones featuring So Yiu-chung and Josephine Ng—hosts of Commercial Radio 2 FM 90.3′s Holy Tricky show; competitors from US burger chain CaliBurger; and the the cast of top-rating YouTube channel Teddy Head.
Also in the competition was Stanley Siu, designer of the award-winning Rising Moon installation in Victoria Park during last year’s Mid-Autumn Festival.
But the eventual winner was the entry from design firm Outsign.Lab, which impressed with its 30-second pre-jump presentation, according to the organizer.
