Lamma Island could double in population with a series of separate plans to redevelop the area, including the possible construction of several residential towers to house up to 5,000 people, Apple Daily reported Tuesday.
The government is planning large shopping arcades, community facilities and hotels in the area, the report said.
Separately, the backers of The Baroque on Lamma, a proposed housing project near Tung O that the Town Planning Board rejected in 2011, have bought several plots of farmland in the area and are understood to be on the brink of resubmitting their rezoning and development application.
Meanwhile, male villagers in Tung O have filed more than 20 applications to build homes under the New Territories Small House Policy.
Tung O village head Chan Wai-ming said many islanders wanted to retire in the community, but were deterred by the lack of medical services and community facilities. The proposed developments would help address those issues, Chan said.
