China eases access to service sector, goes slow with others

China will step up development of the service sector and take a gradual approach to market opening in other industries, Beijing News reported Thursday, citing the State Council.

Premier Li Keqiang said the service industry was a bright spot in the first quarter when the rest of the economy slowed.

The government will streamline approval procedures in the sector and encourage foreign investment as part of its priority tasks to ensure sustainable economic growth.

However, it will proceed gradually in opening the market in accounting, construction design and logistics to foreign investors, the report said.

The cabinet approved a revised draft of the food safety law and vowed to severely punish violators.

The new regulations include stronger oversight of food production, sales and consumption and hold local governments and regulators accountable for food-related incidents.

Li said the revised law better protects public health and safety and will be tough on people who deliberately harm others.
