A defense lawyer for detained civil rights activist Pu Zhiqiang has been arrested for alleged illegal possession of personal information.
Qu Zhenhong became the third person linked to Pu to be detained. He was arrested with a niece in Beijing on Wednesday, Ming Pao Daily reported Friday.
Qu’s detention followed Tuesday’s arrest of Wu Wei, a former Beijing-based journalist for the South China Morning Post, and Xin Jian, an assistant in the Chinese news section in Nihon Keizai Shimbun’s Beijing office. They were held on unspecified charges, the report said.
Ming Pao said Qu and prominent Chinese lawyer Zhang Sizhi, 87, met Pu shortly after his arrest and offered their services.
On Friday, they wrote Beijing Lawyers Association president Zhang Xuebing for help in securing Pu’s release on medical grounds.
Qu’s arrest suggests high-level authorities in Beijing have stepped into Pu’s case, the report said, citing sources.
