HK 13-year-old wins spots at British universities

Three British universities have offered places to 13-year-old Hong Kong girl Chiu Chi-yau on the strength of straight As in her GCE exams, Ming Pao Daily reported Friday.

Chiu’s mother said she was more of a silent supporter than an over-parenting “tiger mom”, and she encouraged her daughter to acquire knowledge from different sources from a young age.

Chiu switched to an international school in Hong Kong at primary four to have more time to read.

She was an avid consumer of Time magazine and other publications like New Scientist from when she was 10, the age at which she also started preparing for the British GCE AS-Level examinations.

She left primary school last year and continued preparing for the exams at home.

Chiu aims to go to university in September and hopes to study medicine at the University of Oxford, the report said.
