A young woman has been swindled out of HK$40,000 in online game credit coupons, Apple Daily reported Monday.
She was among several victims of an online scam targeting users of social media mobile apps.
Hong Kong police recorded 65 such cases involving HK$314,000 in the past three months, the report said.
Inspector Otto Wong, officer-in-charge of the technology crime division of the Police Commercial Crime Bureau, said the number of cases skyrocketed from just one case in February. The victims, aged 12 to 57, were all users of messaging and social media mobile apps.
Hackers would steal users’ passwords and use these to send messages to their contacts to buy game credits. The hackers would then sell the passwords, the report said.
In Taiwan, investigators reported 674 cases of scam related to the popular free messaging service LINE in the first three months.
