Man found with mother’s corpse in cluttered Sham Shui Po flat

A thirty-something Sham Shui Po man with knee-length hair is believed to have laid in his flat with the body of his dead mother for up to five days before police broke into the unit Monday, acting on a neighbor’s complaint about a bad smell, Headline News reported Tuesday.

The man, who has no identity card and is thought to be mentally disabled, tried to deter the officers by lighting a fire in the cluttered flat, the report said. Officers said they had to clamber over items to reach the man and his mother.

Police said a neighbor detected a strange smell coming from the flat Friday and called police Monday when it became intolerable.

The chairwoman of the owners’ corporation said she lived on the same floor as the family but had never met the man. But a building security guard said he had seen the man three times.

The coroner will investigate the mother’s cause of death.
