Oh, mama! it’s ABBA again

It has been a long time coming but Mamma Mia!, the hit musical inspired by a chart-topping ABBA song, will make its second appearance in Hong Kong in September.

Tickets ranging from HK$395 (US$50.95) to HK$995 are on sale for the show’s Sept. 24-Oct. 19 run at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts.

The show has been seen by more than 54 million people around the world and hauled in more than US$2 billion at the box office since its 1999 debut in London’s West End.

Its international tour premiered in Dublin in September 2004 and has been seen by more than 4.3 million in 74 cities in 35 countries.

The Hong Kong leg is part of a world tour that began in Seoul in November. The cast is performing in Basel, Switzerland, and will be in back in Blackpool, England, before coming to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong fans got their first taste of the musical 10 years ago.

The show, written for the stage by British playwright Catherine Johnson, features hit songs by the 1970s Swedish pop group and some new material produced by one of its songwriters.

It tells the story of a young woman who invites all her mother’s former lovers to her wedding to make sure she is given away by one of the men who could be her father.

In 2008, the musical was adapted into a hit movie starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried.
