Alibaba US debut seen in August

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is expected to make its listing debut in the United States on Aug. 8, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reported Wednesday.

The date (double eight) has a special significance in Chinese culture but due to time difference, Asian investors might miss out on the stock’s first trading day.

Alibaba refused to comment.

Meanwhile, the company has teamed up with Guangdong Telecom Co. Ltd. to launch an internet TV modem on Alibaba’s operating system.

The modem supports access to Alipay and Alibaba’s online shopping platform Taobao.

Guangdong Telecom has more than 20 million broadband users.  More than one-fifth are subscribers to its internet TV services.

Alibaba expects to sign up more than one million households for the new service.
