The number of wholesalers catering to parallel traders has more than tripled from seven to 26 in Shek Wu Hui near the Shenzhen border in the last six months, with some outlets clearly detailing payments for taking goods to the mainland, Sky Post reported Wednesday.
Parallel traders buy duty-free goods in Hong Kong and sell them on the mainland where prices and demand are higher. Popular items include baby diapers, infant formula, confectionery such as Ferrero Rocher chocolate and Yakult drinks.
Traders can earn HK$25 for each can of infant formula taken across the border, and up to HK$300 by carting various products in a single trip, sources said.
Concern groups said the parallel trade shops have pushed up rent in Shek Wu Hui and driven away merchants catering to the daily needs of residents, the report said.
