The fashion police have spoken.
Sharon Stone is a little off in a stringy little black dress but Sophia Loren, 79, is hot and regal in a de-rigueur gown most women half her age couldn’t carry.
That’s the verdict from the Cannes Film Festival, the glittering annual gathering on the French Riviera that is more about fashion than movies.
It’s an excuse for designers and jewelers of all stripes to hang their creations on a pretty neck and the dainty shoulders of the world’s rich and famous.
The customary red carpet this year has seen the likes of supermodel Heidi Klum, former France first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, veteran US actress Jane Fonda and Indian beauty Aishwarya Rai, all of whom drew raves.
The harsh light fell on Stone.
“Sharon Stone has got better legs at 56 than most of us will ever have. And since she was surrounded by supermodels, we say why not show them off,” says Britain’s Daily Mail.
“But it might be more customary to attend a film premiere at Cannes in a dramatic full-length gown.”
The ageless Loren, on the other hand, showed up Cannes and age-appropriate, leading the fashion-conscious Arianna Huffington’s eponymous website to huff and puff that the Italian veteran looked “every inch the screen icon in a bejewelled gown fit for Hollywood royalty”.
But fashion tastes evolve, especially in a celebrity event notorious for people coming and going.
Just ask Simone Lancelot, 97. She has been to all but one Cannes Film Festival since 1947.
