Swiss drugmaker Roche Holdings AG said local government authorities visited its Hangzhou office in eastern China’s Zhejiang province Wednesday, the latest sign that Beijing aims to clean up the pharmaceutical industry, the China News Service reported.
A Roche spokesman was quoted as saying that the company would cooperate with the authorities in any inquiries, but did not disclose any details.
The move comes as authorities scrutinize pharmaceutical sales and marketing practises in China.
The Ministry of Public Security last week accused British drug firm GlaxoSmithKline PLC of bribing doctors, hospitals and government officials to drive up drug sales in the country. The case has been handed over to prosecutors.
Roche is best known in China for its Tamiflu flu treatment but it also specializes in drugs to combat cancer.
