A volunteer group caring for stray dogs in Sai Kung is appealing for public support after its rent was more than doubled, Ming Pao Daily reported Tuesday.
Sai Kung Stray Friends (SKSF), which has housed and provided veterinary care to dogs and puppies over the last eight years, said it used to pay HK$20,000 (US$2,580) a month for its Tai Lam Wu Road site until it was sold last year and the buyer upped the rent to HK$50,000 last month.
The landlord wants to redevelop the plot, which now houses 70 dogs, the report said.
SKSF chairwoman Narelle Pamuk said a new site has been found in Ma On Shan but the group needs at least two months to get government approvals and ready the site.
Pamuk said the group really needs donations to sustain its operations or it will be forced to abandon its efforts, the report said.
