Hong Kong confirmed a record 154 new cases of HIV in the three months to March, up 10 percent from a year earlier, Ming Pao Daily reported Wednesday.
The Center for Health Protection said more than half of the confirmed cases resulted from homosexual or bisexual contact, 14 percent were from heterosexual contact and one case was from intravenous drug use. The center said the routes of transmission of the remaining cases had yet to be determined due to inadequate information.
At the same time, 20 more patients were confirmed with AIDS, bringing the city’s total to 1,457. The number of people in Hong Kong with the HIV virus has risen to 6,496.
The center surveyed 853 homosexual men and found more than 35 percent did not use condoms when having high-risk anal sex.
Another survey of 609 brothel patrons revealed that only about 55 percent used condoms and more than half had never had an HIV test.
