The father and two brothers of a 25-year-old Pakistani woman were among the attackers who stoned the woman to death outside a Lahore court Tuesday in revenge for her marrying the man she loved, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing a senior police officer.
Farzana Iqbal was attacked by around a dozen men, including her cousin, a former fiance, the officer said. Her father, who admitted killing his daughter, was the only one of the attackers not to escape.
Iqbal had been engaged to her cousin but married another man, prompting her family to report her as having been kidnapped, the report said. But Iqbal had come to the court to say that she had married her husband by choice.
Some Pakistani families believe they are dishonored if a woman chooses her own spouse, the report said. Rights group the Aurat Foundation estimates that around 1,000 Pakistani women are killed every year by their families in “honor” killings but the real figure could be much higher.
