FIH Mobile wins large Xiaomi order

Contract manufacturer FIH Mobile Ltd. (02038.HK) has won more than half of the handsets outsourced by Xiaomi Technology Co. Ltd., the Hong Kong Economic Journal reported Friday, citing FIH chairman Tong Wen-hsin.

Xiomi has more than doubled its production target for this year to 40 million units. It posted 31.6 billion yuan (US$5.07 billion) in revenue last year.

Tong expects China’s leading brands such as Xiaomi and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. to account for more than half of FIH revenue even as he sees emerging markets driving demand for smartphones in the next three years.

Also, the company is seeking cooperation with other smartphone firms in the mainland and plans to hire workers, mainly in research and engineering, that would bring its headcount to 80,000 from 63,500 at the end of 2013.

FIH signed a deal with BlackBerry Ltd. last year to produce its Z3 model which was launched in Indonesia this month.
