President Xi Jinping said long-term stability in China’s restive Xinjiang region hinges on ethnic unity and is the main goal of the government, Xinhua news agency reported Friday.
Xi called for stepped-up defense against terrorism after a recent bomb attack in the capital Urumqi killed 39 people.
“The Xinjiang issue is an issue of ethnic unity,” he told a two-day central work conference.
Local authorities should strengthen communication between different ethnic groups, promote bilingual education and ensure a more harmonious society, he was quoted as saying.
